“I have an old friend here, I tried to get him in my band a long time ago, but he had his own thing to do. He’s here backstage. I’m gonna try and get him up here to play. His name is Paul James, maybe you’ve seen him around? I know I just saw him out there a minute a ago, Hey Pau,l come on up…” – Bob Dylan

It’s official. Paul James and His Band will pay tribute to the one and only Bob Dylan.

Over the years, Paul has played Blues, 50 & 60’s Rock’n’Roll, and some Bob Dylan songs both electric and acoustic were always included in his set lists. He gained an impressive following in Canada for his authenticity and commitment to the music, winning a Juno Award and The Maple Blues Lifetime Achievement Award for Blues in Canada. As well as playing his own music Paul was asked to back up and record with many Blues Greats along the way like Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley, Lightning Hopkins, Sunnyland Slim, John Hammond, and Mink DeVille to name a few. One night in 1986, Paul jumped off the stage playing his wireless guitar and doing his stage shtick…of going to the bar and ordering a beer. He then started playing slide guitar with the beer bottle and when he looked up he was standing face to face with Bob Dylan!

To cut the story short, they met backstage after the set. Dylan asked if he could sit in with Paul’s band. Paul said he knew many of Bob’s songs as he was a big admirer…Bob said ‘I don’t want to play any of my songs.’He said, ‘I’ll just play backup guitar for you.’ Paul said,’ OK.’ Paul asked Bob if he wanted to go on with the band and Bob said,’why don’t you play a couple songs then introduce me as a HitchHiker from Vancouver.’ After the show Bob piled into Paul’s van with the rest of The Paul James Band and went to Paul’s house where they sat on the floor laughing, drinking, smoking, and playing two acoustic guitars until 10am. Bob came to a few more of Paul’s shows while in town. One where Paul opened the show and then backed up his old friend Bo Diddley. A couple years later Dylan asked Paul to open his show for him at Canada’s Wonderland. Paul, joined Bob on stage over the next 20 years about ten times in different venues and cities in Canada and the USA.

So on March 7, 2020 Hugh’s Room Live will be hosting Paul James’ first ever ’Tribute to Bob Dylan.’ Please, join us as we celebrate the Words and Music of Bob Dylan with a man who shared his stage.

Advance: $20.00 / Doors: $25.00

It’s the night before Bob Dylan’s birthday, and all through the room, singers and songwriters howl at the moon. On May 23, our friend, programmer and fellow singer/songwriter, Blair Packham, will be presenting a tribute to Bob Dylan. As your MC for the night, Blair has invited some of our city’s finest singer/songwriters to join him at Hugh’s Room Live to pay homage to one of the most original and influential voices in American popular music.

Folk rock singer-songwriter, Bob Dylan, was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota. While attending college, he began performing folk and country songs, taking the name “Bob Dylan.” In 1961 Dylan signed his first recording contract, and the rest – as they say – is history. The legendary singer-songwriter has received Grammy, Academy and Golden Globe awards, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Those set to perform on stage include:

Paul James
Ariana Gillis
Stephen Stanley
Nefe
Andrea Ramolo
