Hugh’s Room Forced to Move Due to Rent Hike

As many of you will now have heard, that despite months of negotiations with our landlord, we have failed to come to agreement on terms based on fair market value. As a result we will be forced to close our doors at our current location on March 31, 2020.

It is our intention to honour as many of our show bookings and tickets as possible, but it is going to take us a bit of time to secure an alternate venue. We are confident that all shows on the calendar will have a home and as soon as an alternate venue is secured, we will be notifying all ticket holders immediately. We ask patrons to kindly not reach out to our box office for updates in the interim.

David Francey Screen Door Anniversary Performance
Advance $40 / Door $45*

Doors: 6:00pm
Performance: 8:30pm

“Francey’s clear, simple songs speak volumes to his followers. After a decade in music, David Francey is known as one of Canada’s finest tunesmiths and a champion of the Everyman, admired for his less-is-more approach to writing. It’s amazing how he manages to address deep stuff with such spare ingredients”– The Edmonton Journal

David Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter, who has become known as “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto Star). Born in Ayrshire, Scotland to parents who were factory workers, he moved to Canada when he was twelve. For decades, he worked across Canada in rail yards, construction sites, and in the Yukon bush, all the while writing poetry, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked.

A truly authentic folk singer, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s, his wife, artist Beth Girdler, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. Since then, he has released eleven albums, won three Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band, The Rankin Family, James Keelaghan and Tracy Grammer.

Dr. Mike Daley Presents: The James Taylor Story
Advance $30 / Door $35 *

Dr. Mike Daley and Jill Daley present another installment of their popular lecture/concert series at Hugh’s Room Live with The James Taylor Story. Taylor’s music embodies the art of songwriting in its most personal and universal forms. He is a master at describing specific, even autobiographical situations in a way that resonates with people everywhere. In 1971, Taylor was on the cover of Time magazine, heralded as the harbinger of the singer-songwriter era. Over four decades later, his introspective lyrics and unique guitar playing still blaze a path to which young musicians aspire. He has sold over 100 million albums throughout his career and has earned 40 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards, multiple Grammy Awards and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs have had a profound influence on songwriters and music lovers from all walks of life.

Mike Daley is a musicologist and sought-after lecturer on popular music history and his wife Jill is a full-time pianist at Canada’s National Ballet School and Musician-In-Residence at Church of the Redeemer. Mike and Jill will be joined by Will Reid for the evening on vocals.

These performances typically sell out quickly, so advance tickets are STRONGLY recommended.
