The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band: 30th Anniversary Concert
February 3, 2018 @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm$30 – $35
For over twenty years (1988-2010) the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band was a Canadian success story, hugely popular at home and recognized internationally as being “at the forefront of progressive klezmer and Yiddish music, firmly rooted in tradition yet fully engaged with the immediate present” (Sing Out). They helped spearhead the Klezmer Revival in Canada, making it essential to the nascent World Music scene. Over that period they released six CDs and three music videos, toured across North America and Europe — from Folk on the Rocks to WOMAD (English version) to the Tollwood Festival in Munich, to the Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival in New York to Klezmermania in San Francisco, to festivals and concert halls in Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Frankfurt, Hamburg and more –, received 4 JUNO nominations and one (shared) JUNO Award. Originally formed by trumpeter and composer David Buchbinder and pianist Allen Cole and eventually co-lead with singer Dave Wall, the Flying Bulgars consistently charted a course between the calm waters of tradition and the exciting, uncertain seas of innovation.
Now, the Band is coming together for a performance at Hugh’s Room Live on Saturday, February 3, celebrating the 30th anniversary of their first gig at Clinton’s. Band members from the different eras of the group will perform an evening of the band’s greatest music. Join them for a night that is sure to be raucous, funny, passionate, mysterious, powerful and most definitely celebratory!
