CANELLED – The Cobalt Prize Showcase
March 30, 2015 @ 8:30 pm$25 – $27.50
Produced in Association with The Maple Blues Awards
The Toronto Blues Society and Paul Reddick are proud to announce the creation of a new Contemporary Blues Composition Award…the Cobalt Prize. The intention behind the Cobalt Prize is to promote blues music through exploration of its form.
Hugh’s Room and the Cobalt Prize creator & benefactor, Paul Reddick presents The Colbalt Prize Showcase featuring the first Cobalt Prize recipient, awarded at this year’s Maple Blues Awards, Digging Roots and 2015 Cobalt Prize Finalists Rob Lutes and Samantha Martin.
The intention behind The Cobalt Prize is to encourage and support blues music by promoting the creation of new songs that both draw on the rich traditions of the genre and manage to strike a fresh chord with contemporary audiences. It is my hope that compositions created under its purview will speak to the past of blues music in a way that is relevant to the present moment and inspiring to future generations of this genre’s practitioners and fans. Anyone with an interest in music is welcome to enter the competition, regardless of past experience with the form. Let the canon of blues classics inspire you and let your musical and life experience outside of the blues inform you—let go of preconceived notions of what blues is and identify what it is to you. There is plenty of room for more classic songs in the blues repertoire and no reason why you cannot be the one to write such a song.
With the release of their latest album project, For The Light, multi-award and JUNO winning alternative roots duo, Digging Roots, bring their nomadic wanderlust to sonic terrain. Featuring 12 original tracks that reflect a maturing sense of storytelling, husband and wife team Raven Kanatakta and ShoShona Kish trade lead vocals, continuing to fluidly compliment each other’s strengths while going from whispery intimacies, to smokey wails.
Rob Lutes is a soulful singer-songwriter from Montreal with an ever-growing collection of literate, moving meditations on life and love. Rob Lutes is widely known for his superb songwriting, fingerstyle mastery and soulful vocals. He delivers an exquisite collection of songs that inhabits the intersection of blues, Americana and the contemporary singer-songwriter genres.
One of the rising stars in Toronto’s roots-rock scene, Samantha Martin and her latest ensemble Delta Sugar have quickly gained attention and praise from soul, gospel and blues fans alike. In a short time, Samantha Martin has been featured at festivals of all kinds, including: Calgary Folk Festival, Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival, Dawson City Music Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Summerfolk Festival and Shelter Valley Folk Festival to name a few.
Toronto blues fans where introduced to Martin’s dynamic voice recently when she was featured in the Toronto Blues Society’s annual “Women’s Blues Revue” at Massey Hall (Nov 2014)
