This May, join us at Hugh’s Room Live to celebrate diversity in music. Singers and storytellers of all backgrounds spend an evening sharing fascinating tales of migration while weaving words and a cappella music together to explore the importance of story to people from all cultures and backgrounds.

ARIEL BALEVI tells stories that are rooted in the Persian folklore and classical literature of Iran and Turkey. Exploring cross-cultural influences in storytelling, he has also built narratives that encompass the European fairy tale, the monastic legends of Georgia, and personal family stories of diaspora.

SAGE TYRTLE has performed for audiences of all ages all over the world, from frue stories to traditional folktales to interactive improvised fairy tales. She uses her body and voice as tools to engage her audience. According to the Toronto Star,  “When Sage talks, people don’t just listen, they hang on her every word.”

PRESSGANG MUTINY hails from the port of Toronto. They have been roaring out songs of the sea since 2012.  Performing in both their hometown and on the Canadian and America East cost, they are keeping alive a vital tradition of work songs that represents the world’s earliest multicultural music.

TURKWAZ is unique sound is immersed in diverse traditions from Sufi devotional love songs to rousing Thracian dance music. The four members draw from  Arabic language heritage, Greek music, Turkish fascination and Balkan traditions, adding a touch of Albanian, Bulgarian and Macedonian musical conventions to the mix.

JOANNA WALLFISCH is a London born singer-songwriter described by Downbeat Magazine as “an exquisite singer-songwriter” with a “crystalline voice.” Wallfisch is a master in the art of live vocal looping. She creates mesmerising soundscapes to accompany her poetic lyrics.

DAN YASHINSKY draws on his own crossroads heritage (Canadian, Jewish, Turkish, Romanian, American, French) and shares stories he has collected on his travels to spin extraordinary tales that captivate his audiences. He has performed and taught at festivals in Israel, Wales, England, Germany, Brazil, Austria, France, the U.S., Singapore, Ireland, and across Canada. He is the writer/editor of seven books and one of the founders of Storytelling Canada.
