Ken Whiteley’s Gospel Matinee
February 22, 2015 @ 2:00 pm$10 – $22.50
Andrew Craig, Dione Taylor, George Koller and Dave Wall
We are so blessed in this city to have such incredible artists capable of creating extremely compelling music in diverse styles. Andrew Craig, David Wall and Dione Taylor are three of the best. All three are spectacular vocalists. All three can cover a wide range of styles. They all write wonderful new music in those styles and bring to life older classics. What I love about the interactive format of the Gospel Sunday Matinees is that this will be a unique chance to allow these artists to really share with each other and the audience this creativity, diversity and stunning vocal prowess. Andrew Craig has been called “an astonishingly talented composer, producer and performer” (Whole Note magazine). He spent 10 years with CBC and it is exciting to see him now have the time to come out from behind the scene to front and center stage. He is a great pianist and he’s been featured in major tributes to such talents as Oscar Peterson and Quincy Jones. David Wall’s legendary status goes back to his days as a lead singer of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir and subsequently making cutting edge Klezmer with the Flying Bulgurs. With the presence of his brilliant tenor he shares his progressive social and spiritual values like a master. Dione Taylor began her musical career playing organ in her father’s church and has since gone on to establish a reputation as one of the best jazz, R&B and gospel singers in the country. Whether singing one of her own compositions or leading us in a gospel standard, she is guaranteed to move you. One of the reasons that I program these concerts the way I do is to keep myself at my musical best, by surrounding myself with such talented people. George Koller, the musical wizard of the string bass, stands as high as you can go in the category. We’ll see you there! ~ Ken Whiteley
