Featuring Akim Triebsch, Makayla Lynn, Billy Raffoul and Joseph & The Mercurials

Now in its eighth year DISCOVERIES owes a great deal toHugh’s Room which continues to partner with us as we showcase yet another very eclectic group of artists, most of whom are just beginning their creative journeys.  The concept is a simple one, (none of these artists is yet able to fill the room on their own, although we have confidence that each one will get to that point) bring four talents together, give each 30 minutes on stage and have each one bring out their fans, family and friends.  Suddenly you have a full room and everyone present cheers on their artist and in the process discovers new talent to support in the future.

JOSEPH AND THE MERCURIALS  Borrowing heat from the still burning flames of several other projects.  Joseph & The Mercurials starts its own fire. Bringing dark melodrama into the cold light of day. Keys and strings bend to the deep hollow ring of synthesized bells. Drums pulse like thunder and the heartbeat of a forgotten people. Reverberating and echoing. Blending into silk behind the Haunting vocals & Powerful Rhythm of Joseph. A dangerous mix of Sound and Vision… www.josephandthemercurials.com

MAKAYLA LYNN  is an eleven-year-old singer-songwriter from Nova Scotia. She may be young, but don’t let that fool you – her effortless ability to play guitar and her songwriting skills can only be explained as “mature far beyond her years”.  She is a little girl with no fear, unbelievable talent, big dreams, and an unstoppable future. Her first recording I’ll Just Keep Being Me (June 2011) received great praise from her community and the media. While she has only been performing for a few years, she has sung at The Province House, fairs, weddings, festivals, exhibitions, private parties, talent showcases, parades and many other places. 2011 highlights include the Cavendish Beach Music Festival and performing with Charlie Major at The Rodeo Lounge in Dartmouth, NS. Makayla will soon release her second album The Music In Me, which features eight original songs and will be used as a demo for her trip to Nashville in fall 2012.  www.makaylalynnmusic.com

BILLY RAFFOUL – Born in Leamington Ontario, 18-year-old Billy Raffoul is a self-taught musician, who received his first guitar when he was ten years old. He is influenced by everything he listens to, yet is keen to specifically mention The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen and The Black Keys among his favourites. From a young age it was obvious to everyone that Billy had a special talent. He played his first solo show at a local restaurant in the summer of 2009 and, since then has continued to perform at local venues creating a loyal following within the southern Ontario music scene. A major highlight of Billy’s career was receiving an invitation from Canadian musician and composer, Pavlo to perform alongside him at his 2011 concert in Windsor, ON. Billy will soon release his debut album showcasing his soulful and intense vocals and self-described alternative-rock sound. Stay tuned for CD release announcements. www.youtube.com/billyraffoul

AKIM TRIEBSCH Music, dance and poetry have always been a part of Akim’s spirit. At only nine years old, he cleverly hand crafted a very unique guitar from pieces of junk including wood, nails, and rubber strings. This clearly was the beginning of a lifelong musical journey. Akim studied classical guitar at the Royal Conservatory of Canada and also completed a Film and Television Production Program at Ryerson University.~ He went on to become an award-winning director by his early 20s and has worked all across Canada. The opportunity arrived for a new adventure in his life after agreeing to work as a sailor on the Avontuur, a double masted schooner. Carrying only, his guitar, harmonica and camera, Akim managed to successfully create an album of soulful blues rock from what began as a documentary film idea. His album, Avontuur Transmission, is a captivating concept album that marries the old-school philosophy of sailing with life lessons for the here and now, and showcases his talent for story telling.~ Akim continually travels and shares his music all over the world. www.akim.bandcamp.com
