The Ed Bickert tribute recording honors the immeasurable contribution that Ed has made to music in Canada. Ed appeared on the world stage with Paul Desmond and Milt Jackson, and was an integral member of the Boss Brass and the Moe Koffman Quintet. As a leader, he won two Junos and was named to the Order of Canada in 1996. Ed Bickert retired from playing in the early 2000s, but continues to have an enduring influence on jazz musicians in Canada and beyond. The project clearly illustrates the affection and respect he has earned.
In October 2015, three of Toronto’s finest guitarists spent the day at Revolution Recording (Studio A) creating this musical tribute to Ed. The recording features trios led by Rob Piltch, Reg Schwager and Lorne Lofsky. Lofsky won a Juno with Ed for their 90’s recording This Is New. They are joined by bassists Neil Swainson, Kieran Overs, Dave Piltch and drummers Terry Clarke, Davide DiRenzo and Barry Elmes.
The project is produced by João Carvalho and Al Gorman with contributions from all the musicians, Revolution Studio, the Rotary Club of Scarborough, and the Twelfth Fret. No one associated with the project has profited personally; everyone donated their time as a token of the gratitude they have for the body of Ed Bickert’s work. The recording will be released in the spring of 2017, with all the funds, as per Ed’s wishes, going to the MS Society of Canada, to support their efforts in fighting the disease that took Ed Bickert’s beloved wife, Madeline.
