Drawing elements from pop, folk and rock, the music of Brian Rudy + The Architects is driven by Brian’s distinctive acoustic guitar style and the strength of his songwriting. His unique sound developed in part through his unusual guitar playing technique whereby, as a left-handed player, he learned to play a right-handed guitar flipped upside down.
In 1999, Brian Rudy + The Architects released their debut CD Divided Man. The album features guest musicians including Gavin Brown (today one of Canada’s most sought after writer/producers, working withThree Days Grace, BillyTalent and Metric), Dave Clark (Rheostatics), Lori Cullen and Cate Friesen. The album received wide critical acclaim, national airplay on the CBC, and regular rotation on campus radio stations across Canada and the U.S. Music from Divided Man was mined for two film soundtracks, and two songs from the CD were finalists in the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals’ Song Writing Competition and the UNISONG International Songwriting Competition.
With the success of Divided Man behind him, Brian changed gears to focus on his career as an architect at the renowned firm of Moriyama & Teshima known for such seminal buildings as the Ontario Science Centre and the Bata Shoe Museum. Brian, a principal at M&T with a focus on arts and cultural projects, has led some of the firm’s most high profile projects including the Governor General’s Medal winning Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and the award-winning Waterloo Regional Museum. Throughout his time at Moriyama &Teshima, Brian nurtured his musical interest as the firm’s resident composer, writing and recording music for architectural presentations and animations. The music composed during these years seeded his inspiration for a new full-length album aptly called ‘Museum’.
Museum is a concept album, similar to Divided Man before it. The Museum Suite is a grouping of five songs that are musically and thematically intertwined, creating the backbone of the CD. The theme of the Suite focuses on the impact of humans on planet earth. It highlights our complacent attitude towards the environment and the destructive path we are headed down. Brian’s metaphoric Museum is the planet itself, housing the most treasured artifact; our fragile environment. Museum’s music is varied and complex, and includes guests Dave Clark, Lori Cullen, Chris Bartos and Leonardo Valvassori.
Brian Rudy + The Architects will be releasing Museum on November 26, 2013 at Hughes Room in Toronto. Please visit www.brianrudy.com for more information.
